Guidelines for authors

The Romanian Journal of Counseling is a bilingual journal that publishes articles addressing counseling practice with diverse client populations in a variety of contexts, as well as education and supervision of counselors. The articles must be scholarly, based on existing literature and must include relevant implications for the practice of counseling. Typically, articles should belong to one of the following categories, but other kinds of submissions may be accepted:

1. Theory. The articles from this category focus on a new theoretical approach regarding a particular subject, literature reviews, innovative integration of published research within a particular area, a critical overview of a particular concept in literature, etc. All theoretical pieces are related to the counseling field.

2. Research. Both qualitative and quantitative studies are accepted. In these manuscripts, the review of literature provides the context and the need for the study, logically leading to the purpose and the research questions. The methodology includes a complete description of the participants, the variables and the instruments used, a data analysis and the results are discussed from a clinical significance point of view. The conclusions and the implications for counseling practice and future research are included in the Discussion section.

3. Profiles.  The articles from this category present organizations, projects or personalities that have made significant contributions to counseling through leadership or innovative practices.

4. Trends.  In this category are included book reviews, events and conferences presentations, meant to provide the readers with information about the literature and the new trends in counseling.

5. Best practices.  The articles in this category focus on counseling interventions based on outcome data. The accepted manuscripts use evidence-based data to address the efficacy of innovative approach in the practice of counseling, counseling training or counseling supervision. Articles focused on the efficacy of a certain intervention in particular contexts based on empiric arguments are also accepted. The manuscripts can also contain data-based outcome studies, case studies, meta-analyses, reviews of literature or practical considerations of the research on a topic.

Footnotes

Footnotes are used for providing extra information or for confirming the copyright status.

Appendixes

The appendixes of the manuscript (labeled Appendix 1, Appendix 2, etc) contain extra materials, such as information about long methodological procedures, calculus, etc.

Tables and Figures

The author must number all tables and figures with Arabic numerals, in the order of the first mention in the text, even if a detailed discussion of the table/figure is presented later in the text. The author should label them as  Table 1, Table 2, etc or Figure 1, Figure 2, etc. First present all tables and then all figures. Place the tables and the figures after the appendixes and point out the position of each in the text as following:

————————————

Insert Table 1 here

————————————

Each table or figure must have an introduction sentence in the text. The accepted format is the standard (canonic) one. Each table must report one single type of analysis (which must be identical with the name of the table) and each column and row must contain only one type of data.

Quotations

It is important that the author mentions in the Bibliography each and every quoted paper in the manuscript. In the text, the authors can quote as following:

1. One author

Name and year: It has been shown that X is associated with Y (Author, year)

Year only: The author (year) has shown that ….

2. Two or more authors

When a paper has two authors, the author needs to quote the names of both authors each time the reference appears in the text. When a paper has three, four or five authors, the author must quote all of them the first time. In the following quotations the name of the first author will be used, followed by the phrase et al. (no italic font, full stop punctuation sign after the word al.) and the year of publishing.

3. Two or more quoted papers

The author must alphabetize the quotations. Two or more papers by the same author (or group of authors) published in the same year will be marked by adding “a”, “b” etc after the publishing year.

4. Unidentified or anonymous author papers

When a paper has unidentified author, the author of the manuscript must quote the title of the paper and the year in the text. The title of the article, chapter or webpage will be mentioned between quotation marks and the name of the periodical, book, brochure or report will be written with Italic:

… regarding the organizational commitment (“Study Report”, 2011)

… book Motivational correlations (2011)

5. Page numbers in quotations

When quoting a specific part of a certain source, the author must indicate the page, chapter, figure, table or formula. The number of the page will always be mentioned:

 (Johnny, 2011, p. 13)

6. Secondary sources

If the original sources are not physically available, the author must mention the second source in the bibliographic list and mention the original paper and quote the secondary source in the text:

… the report elaborated by Minnie (quoted in Smith, 2011).
